Startups for Net Neutrality

The future of our internet is at risk. The FCC is considering new rules that will allow “paid prioritizations” on the Internet - creating a “fast lane” for companies that can pay, and a “slow lane” for everyone else.

The beauty of the Internet is that everybody with a laptop and an internet connection can start a business and have an impact on the world. All great ideas have an equal chance at success because everyone can communicate to end users on the same conditions. The principle of treating all content equally is called net neutrality. Limiting this principle will hurt the Internet ecosystem and hinder the success of current and future startups.

The new rules would place an incredible burden on small, high-growth companies when the deck is already stacked in favor of larger, well-funded businesses. The FCC’s proposed framework will unequivocally empower the companies that can pay at the expense of the next generation of innovators.

Entrepreneurs rely on an open Internet to build their companies, and investors rely on the certainty of an open Internet to provide the capital that powers the innovation ecosystem. Startups rely on not being blocked, discriminated against, or subject to fees for access and preference. That’s why over 150 Internet companies, from small startups to industry giants, have already sent a letter urging the FCC to protect an open, equal Internet.

This is why we urgently ask the FCC to reconsider the current proposal, and seriously consider the reclassification of Internet service as a public utility under Title II. Only this will ensure that we can protect and empower consumers, small businesses, and the economy.

We welcome every member of the global startup community to join us in promoting net neutrality.
